Welcome

Welcome to the Burial Grounds of Sutherland, Scotland

In Scotland official registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages did not begin until 1855.  Prior to that date we do have to rely on the Old Parish Registers of the Church which unfortunately are not always easily found and when they are can be very difficult to read.  One very good source of information has always been gravestones.  I, with the help of many, have over the past years visited every burial ground in the county and have photographed as many stones as possible.  With the help of earlier recordings and the old records this site now has a large burial ground section with photographs.

This huge, unique, collection of photographs is an invaluable guide to the people of Sutherland.  For many of those buried with a headstone prior to 1855, when official registration started in Scotland, a gravestone is the only record of their death. This makes this collection so important to the history of the county. Unlike earlier recordings, which only recorded those who were born pre 1855, this photographic collection takes us to more recent times.

The collection consists of nearly 6,000 photographs and transcriptions and these are displayed to members in a simple to use photo album format. There is no longer a charge to view these albums but please be aware that they are only available to view until early 2019.
